Week 11

Language function: Giving opinions (informal)

This week was only one day of class. The activities were received well by the students as they seemed engage during the class. The students did not naturally gravitate towards the language function so I reminded them for every activity to use the handout given by the teaching partners with the target language chunks.

The teaching partners kept time with a timer and did some modeling for the activities. At times it was confusing as to who to listen to as they talked at the same time on occasion. I tried to look at the PPT to help when the instructions weren't clear. After each instruction, I talked to my group before starting the activity to clarify and direct them to ensure that the activity would run smoothly.

The last activity, I had each student participate for the two step process for re-writing a problem in their own way/perspective using the language function and split up as pairs when working with the other group. The activity was like Dear Abby. So I monitored each student's work as they wrote their problem and a solution to the other group.

One activity I saw that they had 5 minutes left so I worked on challenging them to use the language function more. I also noticed that there was extra time for re-writing their problem in the last activity so I also had them answer what a solution was and monitored their language (written) for that as well.

I noticed that other groups only had 1 write up of the problem and noticed one group had people talking about off topic issues. When it came time to share the problems, Yuri and I decided on the spot to have pair work when my group shared and then whole group when her group shared. But after my little sisters were done, a couple of Yuri's group also shared their own. So about 2 or 3 of her little sisters said their problem together.

Overall, the little sisters seemed interested in the topic. One of my little sisters was especially happy to see the board game. We had a lot of interesting conversations as well as using the target language. It would have been nice if we could have finished the game just because we only got about halfway through. It was mainly because everyone's point of view was so interesting.
